INSTRUMENTED VEHICLE FOR THE CONTROL OF PIPELINES-MULTICOIL THICKENESS TRANDUCER

Ziel

The aim of this project is to study and design an instrumented vehicle for the control of pipelines with a multi coil thickness transducer, which will detect corrosion accurately and distinguish severe local corrosion from general corrosion.
The research carried out to date through the contract nr 09028/85 " "Test of prototype of a self-fragmenting vehicle destined for the control of pipelines" has enabled us to define and design an instrumented vehicle with a single coil thickness transducer.
This PIG allowed detection of general corrosion in a pipe section, but did not localize corrosion on a tube circumference. A multi coil PIG would enable the measurement of local corrosion such as corrosion pits.
Phase 1, 2, 3 have been completed
The instrumented multicoil corrosion conveyor is composed by :
- One emitting coil
- Six receiving coils
- Acquisition and measures data storage electronics in between the emitter and receiver modules
- One odometer for distance measurements of the conveyor.
Phase 1 :
- study and modelling of the sensor has been achieved
- Several realizations and trials of diverses sensors have been made (different impedances and different ferromagnetic materials) Phase 2 :
Study and integration of the electronics have been achieved :
- Multichannels conditioning electronics
- Increase of memory to 4 Mbytes
- Integration of low consumption CMOS components
Phase 3 : Trials :
- Development of a test station at Syminex
- Development of hardware and software for data transfer and results interpretation
- Complementary external station tests
- Optimization of the multicoil electronics and odometer
- Trials of signal deconvolution and interpretation
Results: the wholedevelopment has lead to a compact multichannel corrosion tool with :
- an equivalent sensitivity compares to the monocoil tool (1 to 2 of phase shift for 1 % of section loss)
- one punctual defect influences several channels (1 to 3).
Though diverse problems raises for detection without reference log . One may observe variations of 30 on a log induced by the variation of the pipe magnetic permittivity compares to 10 phase shift for severe defects limiting drastically the use of such tools for corrosion control without any previous reference.
The main characteristics of the multi-coil pig would be :
- detection of severe and local corrosion in the inner and outer sides of the pipe wall,k
- construction in syntactic foam,
- self fragmenting vehicle
- microprocessor electronics, storage of data in CMOS memory.
The specific study concerns the multi-coil thickness transducer and the realization and integration of the electronics in the vehicle
.
The transducer will be composed of one transmitting coil and 4 or 6 receiving coils situated at the rear of the vehicle.
The transmitting coil produces a sinusoidal magnetic field.
The voltage induced in each receiving coil presents a phase shift on the induced field, proportionnal to the thickness of the surface , in each generator.
The project is divided in 3 phases :
1. study and construction of a multicoil thickness transducer
2. electronic study and integration
3. tests.
