AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER ENERGY MODULE : HEAT GENERATION LOOP

Objectif

The main objective of the project is the tuning up of a heat generation loop with a thermal power of 400 kW, cooled by pressurized water. The loop is composed of :
- a 60 bar aeronautical combustion chamber, working with methanol and oxygen,
and cooled by injection of recirculating combustion gases at
around 200 deg. C
- a pressurized water boiler to cool the combustion gases down to 200 deg. C
- a water cooled exchanger to condense the combustion products (CO2, H2O)
- a pump for recirculating the gases to the combustion chamber.
In the future, this heat generation loop is to be the heat generation device of a Rankine cycle power module using steam or organic fluid, depending on the power level.
Thanks to the condensation of the combustion products, no exhaust system is required. So, the mass of the module is constant and there is no limit of the diving depth.
a) Design
The main characteristics of the heat generation loop, dtermined with a simulation code, are:
- nominal thermal power : 400 kW
- operating pressure : 6 MPa
- gas temperature at the outlet of the combustion chmaber : 700 deg. C
- gas temperature at the outlet of the water boiler : 200 deg. C
- gas temperature at the outlet of the condenser : 15 deg. C
- thermal power of the water boiler : 413 kW
- thermal power of the condenser : 34,4 kW
- range of working power : 25 to 100%
b) Ignition tests
Some explosions have been observed during preliminary tests. Modifications of the ignition system and procedure made then the ignition reliable and safe.
c) Thermal behaviour of the heat generation loop
Tests at various thermal powers (100 to 400 kW) were successfully carried out, giving the following results:
- high working stability
- complete condensation of combustion products (H2O, CO2)
- combustion efficiency greater then 0,9997 as soon as the oxygen percentage in the combustion gases is more than 2%
- heat conversion efficiency round 90-95%
- no degradation of test bench components have been observed
- about 75 hours of stable and automatically controlled operation
The project began in October 1989 and has 3 years duration.
It is divided into 3 phases :
PHASE 1 : Design, sizing of the heat generation loop, specifications, construction drawings of each component of the test bench.
PHASE 2 : Procurement and manufacturing, erection of test facilities : modified combustion chamber, fluid circuits, electrical circuits for control, regulation and safety. Implementation of a data acquisition programme for measurement and control.
PHASE 3 : Tests of the heat generation loop, including ignition, thermal behaviour, thermal balance and efficiency under various operating conditions.
