Objectif To establish the state of integrity of offshore structure by means of a portable instrumentation system; to specify a permanent instruction system and to develop the relevant software; to analyse new design methodologies and their mutual influence with monitoring inspection activities. The portable instrumentation system has been tested at sea, while the computer procedure for fatigue accounting and crack growth speed prediction have been tested on an actual platform. The portable instrumentation system is based on the underwater monitoring of vibration induced by local excitation. The system is composed of three underwater accelerometer heads and electronics for data acquisition, an underwater electro-hydraulic exiter and a surface container equiped with data recording and control electronics. Besides the design and construction of the portable monitoring system during the project development, other activities were performed:- issue of a set of computer procedures and programmes to update the fatigue accounting and to simulate the propagation of cracks, by using strain measurements in a few points of the structure;- examination of different design methodologies based on "damage tolerance approach" in order to establish their applicability to the design of offshore structures.
