350 KW VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE ON THE ISLAND OF ANDROS

Objetivo

Demonstrate the technical and economic viability of the 350 kW vertical axis wind turbine as designed by Adecon of Canada and built by Aeolos in Greece.
Several parts of the wind turbine will be manufactured in Greece. The objective is to demonstrate the possibility of exploitation of the vertical axis wind turbines in a reliable way, acceptable by PPC's grid and, in anticipated industrial mass production with economical cost of the produced kWh.

The vertical axis 350 kW wind turbine will be installed at Kalyvari on Andros island and will be connected to the local grid. The site of the installation presents a very attractive wind profile typical for demonstration purposes in Greece with average speeds of 8 m/s or more. The 2 bladed wind turbine has an equator height of 30,5 m and rotor diameter of 21,4 m with a total swept area of 415 sqm. Electricity will be produced by a 350 kW asynchronous generator at 1500 rpm which will be coupled to the rotor through a gearbox 33/1500 rpm and a suitable flexible coupling. The blades are constructed from parallel profiles made form extruded special aluminium alloy, which have along the blade-length the same air-foil section NACA 0018. The kind and the art of construction of the blades permits also great reliability and drastic cost reduction in comparison with the conventional blades. The annual yield is 1150 MWh assuming 100% availability.
The estimated payback time for the demmonstration project is 8 years.
