Objetivo The objective of the project is to demonstrate the reduction in diesel usage and the improvement in power quality when a short term flywheel energy store is added to a wind/diesel system. It is proposed to install a 100/20/20 kW wind/diesel/flywheel system at Toplou site , Greece, to evaluate the system benefits in a community which hitherto has only had an intermittent power supply. The system consists of a Windharvester made, 100 kW horizontal axis, 3 bladed wind turbine, a 20 kW synchronous diesel generator and 20 kWh flywheel storage system and it is capable of providing power either from the wind turbine or the diesel generator or by parallel operation. The role of storage is to maximise the utilisation of energy from the wind turbine in order to limit diesel stop/starts, running time and wear/tear. The load management system's primary function is to ensure that the load is matched as closely as possible to the combined output of the wind turbine and the storage unit.During the demonstration phase, apart the wind data, the energy balance, the power quality and the use of the diesel will be monitored. In addition, electricity consumption at each point of supply will be metered and demand load and managed load differentiated.
