55 KW WIND TURBINE FOR INDEPENDENT POWER GENERATION FROM COMBINED WIND, HYDRO AND DIESEL PLANT WITH PUMPED STORAGE

Obiettivo

To develop and demonstrate the performance of a hybrid wind/hydro/diesel electrical generating system. A wind turbine is th primary generator with a hydro electric generator acting in support during periods of clam by taking advantage of a small water catchment area naturally filled through rainfall and to which water may be pumped from below the hydro generator. Pumped water storage allows recovery of wind turbine generated power surplus to immediate requirements through pumping to the higher elevation. Management of the electrical generation system to accommodate both independent and parallel operations of wind
This project has admirably demonstrated the success of a hybrid wind turbine and hydro turbine generating system supported by pumped water storage and using load management techniques to optimise energy use. It has provided a reliable, coherent electricity power supply system to a remote island community virtually eliminating the need to use diesel generators.
The parallel operation of the generators commenced in October 1989. After some rather minor problems that turned up, a consistent system operation was achevied in December 90.
On an annual base the wind turbine produced the 77% of the demand, while the micro hydro produced the 23% and the diesel the 1%.
A 60 kW wind turbine has been installed on Foula Island in an integrated wind/hydro/diesel system with install powers of 55 kW/15 kW/27.5 kW respectively. The diesel plant will be used only us back-up. On the island there are 24 habitable dwellings with an estimated maximum demand of 14-25 kW in winter time and 188 kW in summer time. The estimated annual yield is 160 MWh for the wind turbine and 38.6 MWh for the microhydro electric plant, totaling 198,6 MWh annualy. Exceed wind energy will be used to pump water in order to increase the stored capacity when the reservoir level is low.
For this purpose, two water turbines, one of 10 kWe and one of 5 kWe (105m nominal head), each one fitted with a 12.5 kW induction motor/generator will be used. In addition the 10 kW unit will also have coupled a brakeless alternator with a nominal rating of 25 KVA. Both induction machines will be fitted with power factor compensation.
The overall operation of the system will be automatic with prime use being made of wind energy.
Detailed monitoring will give a full understanding of the operation of the system. The total cost price per kWh produced is estimated to 0.22 while any other conventional solution would give at least 0.32 UKL/kWh. Thus the estimated payback time will be about 8 years.
