Objetivo The re-instatement of an abandoned hydroelectric generating station through the installation of four new turbine-generator units with the minimum of modification to the existing civil works. In addition, the operation of the hydroelectric generators will be coordinated with the demands of the irrigation network. The station annual energy output is estimated at 4,000,000 kWh and the anticipated cost per unit generated is about 100 Lire/kWh.The original power station was installed in 1899 and comprised two open flume, Francis turbines to which a third was added in 1906. This station produced power until 1974 when it was abandoned, due in part to the reduction in the demand for irrigation water. The new installation, which will use the existing civil works to a large extent, will comprise four turbine-generating units, two discharging into the Roggione Sartinara channel and two into the Cavo Nuovo channel. An automatic control system will coordinate the management of the turbine-generator set operation with the demands of the irrigation network. Discharge water, in excess of the irrigation demand, will be released from the network via the Roggione Sartinara channel. The technical data of the plant is as follows; Discharge Channel Sartinara Cavo Nuovo Number of turbines 2 2 Net head (m) 3.62.7Flow (m3/s) 7,5 2.7 Rated output (kW) 230 104 All four turbines are of the vertical axis, axial flow type and rotate at 190 rev/min. They are all connected via gearboxes to asynchronous generators which run at 1000 rev/min and have a voltage of 400 V. The electricity produced is sold to the local grid network.
