Cel To demonstrate a grid-connected induction generator with characteristics giving constant frequency electrical output for variable torque and speed mechanical input. Such a machine should allow optimisation of output power from the hydro-electric resources, without need for a governor or interface network. In addition, the system should present no electrical transient difficulties (e. g. at start-up)to the grid, The plant will produce an estimated 300 mwh/year at a cost of 5. 5 p/kwh.A power factor controller (PFC) has been developed under the project which automatically adjusts the voltage on the generator in order to improve its power factor and match the turbine torque and consequently optimising the output power generated. The effect of the controller has been demonstrated by varying the supply voltage to the generator, connecting in series solid state energy saving generator controller. The controller reduces the voltage on the generator when the latter is driven by lower turbine power (lower speed) and therefore, improves its efficiency and the power output under lower head and flow conditions. The solid state controller provides soft start to the system and therefore, at start up, overloading of the grid and mechanical stress on the generator-turbine coupling are minimised. The plant in which the PFC has been installed will produce an estimated 158 MWh/year at a cost of 11.5 p/kWh. Operating time is relatively high being in excess of 10,5 months per year.Catchment area 312 km2Annual rainfall 1115 mmHydraulic machine vertical Francis turbineHead 1.9 mFlow 5.0 cumsElectrical machine induction generator with power factor controller and soft startrating 25 kWvoltage 388 vspeed 1100 rpmfrequency 50 Hzphases 3This project involves the installation at an existing watermill site of a 25 kW hydro-electric power station. A standard Francis hydraulic turbine is used to drive an electrical generator through a gearbox. Electricity is used by the local mill. The novel feature of the installation is the use of a modified version of PFC (power factor controller) with a soft start feature in series with a conventional induction generator.
