EQUIPMENT, OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE AND POSSIBILITIES OF SEISMOLOGY USING TRANSVERSE WAVES

Objective

The purpose of this project is to find an automatic and continuous computation to correlate seismic events registered in both p and s modes in order to use s waves for seismic interpretation.
No commercial applications. The original assumption was too limited, the influence of variations on the amplitudes is not negligible.
Seismic responses are assumed to be comparable in the p and s modes; in other words, the reflection coefficients are assumed to be of the same order of magnitude in both modes. Since propagation velocity is very different, the seismic responses would appear with a different length in the time scale. Where the p s velocity ratio remains constant, the corresponding parts of p and s seismic traces may be inferred by a simple change of scale. For a window small for the ratio (vs-vp) to be considered a constant in this interval, a scale ratio value would exist for which the correlation between the p wave trace and the s wave trace will be maximum. For each position of the gliding window, the detection of this maximum will give the tie of the two traces and the scale ratio. The computation of the vs-vp ratio may be done twice, introducing a redundancy: first, from the progression of the tie position; secondly, from the progression of the scale ratio. A statistical approach is necessaryfor coloured conventional sections, since the colour code is limited to values.
