Objetivo To develop a high efficiency process capable of upgrading low value, high sulphur heavy oils to more valuable light hydrocarbons as sng alone, or sng plus ethane and light aromatics.Using atmospheric and vacuum residual oils in the fbh pilot plant, sufficient gasification has been achieved to satisfy the requirements of a fully integrated sng plant which would have an overall thermal efficiency of about 80%. Separate studies have shown all the process units, including the gasification section, to be technically feasible and practicable. The next stage would be to construct a plant to further develop the fbh reactor and associated systems at or near to commercial scale.In the process, heavy oils are reacted directly with hydrogen typically at 750 deg. C. And at 50 bar in a recirculating fluidised bed reactor, the fluidised bed hydrogenerator (fbh). A range of residual oils of sg up to 1.02 have been tested in a 250 mm diameter pilot plant with a throughput of 8500 nm3-day. Associated studies included recovery of high grade heat from the reactor product stream and the assessment of materials of construction for the process equipment.Scale up of the reactor design was studied on a vessel of 1500 mm diameter using fluidised bed depths of up to 9m. In this vessel nitrogen gas was used at moderate temperature and pressure as the fluidising gas and different designs of recirculating beds were tested.
