RECOVERY OF HYDROCARBONS FROM BITUMINOUS ROCKS

Objectif

Development of a retorting process for the extraction of hydrocarbons from bituminous rocks and/or sands.
A patent application concerning the new retorting process was drawn up and filed. The tests on a rotary drum have led to a definition of the criteria for the design of a pilot plant with a capacity of 48 MTPD.
The basic study of the industrial plant (50 000 MPTD) has been completed. It concerned material and heat balances. A rotary drum and two main furnaces were also designed. Laboratory tests showed that pyrolysis of bituminous rock could be carried out with 13 kg of HC per 200 kg of impregnated rock.
The new process to be developed is characterized by the way in which retorthing heat is supplied in a special reactor where no intermediates are used (whether gas or inert solid).
The main phases of the project are:
1. basic study (identification of the necessary chemical physical parameters, optimization of the pilot plant capacity, planning of laboratory tests, preliminary financial calculation)
2. construction of a pilot plant
3. laboratory and pilot plant tests.
If the results of phase 3 are positive, a semi-industrial plant (500 to 1 000 tpd)could be envisaged in a later stage.
