Cel To design and construct a water/water electric heat pump system to provide space heating and domestic hot water for Iona Abbey, and to provide a heat recovery potential for the recycling of the waste domestic hot water.The project was considerably delayed, because the Historic Buildings Authority specified that an underground plant room should be used. Plant construction ended in late 1983. A number of problems were then encountered with the sea water pumping installation, the cold start-ups, the corrosion and blockage of evaporator tubes and the voltage fluctuations of the local network.The cost of the installation was approximately 115,000 UKL while an extra cost of 112,000 UKL for the reconstruction of the necessary plant-room was anticipated.As the plant did not work properly after installation and since the investment cost was far higher than expected, it has been concluded that the project would never reach its initial objectives. It has been therefore decided in March 1987 not to monitor the project.Conventional heating systems can be expensive for Iona due to high fuel costs. A heat pump system was therefore selected for heating the Abbey. Continuous heating is necessary to eliminate algal growth and surface spalling of the sandstone carvings, by condensation. The design cooling load of the Abbey is 625 MWh, estimated for a 210 days heating period. Heat is extracted from sea water entering at 9 deg.C and leaving at 7 deg.C.The heat output of 220 kW is delivered by hot water entering at 42 deg.C and leaving at 50 deg. C. Estimated electricity consumption 179 MWh at a maximum rate of 64 kW, at COP of 3.2. The monitoring will be automatic and measurements will be transmitted by data line to the main equipment contractor in Glasgow.
