ENERGY SAVING BY HOT PRESSING OF HIGH QUALITY RECYCLED BOX BOARD

Objectif

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of introducing a highly innovative pressing technique that allows more water to be removed mechanically from the board web in the folding box board production process. This technique enables production of high quality box board from recycled raw material together with substantial saving of energy.
THERMAL SAVINGS
The use of steam in the TEM-SEC press leads to a reduction in the use of steam in the dryer because the board web sheet at the entrance of the dryer is both dryer and warmer. Before the retrofit the press section yielded a dry material content of 43%; afterwards 48%. For every tonne of water less to be evaporated 1.6 tonne less steam is needed. Because the sheet is already heated after the TEM-SEC, less energy is needed in the dryer.
The total thermal energy saving worked out at 15%.
Impact on the environment is reduced due to energy saving.
Innovatory aspects:
* New pressing technology using simultaneous heating and pressing of the sheet for dewatering purposes.
* First application of this technology in the production of high quality folding box board (there is increasing demand for this product).
* Possibility to produce a recycled box board, competitive to box board made from virginal raw material (wood). This would have major environmental impact.
* Possible use of waste heat (flash steam) for heating the base cylinder. The process involves the following main steps:
RAW MATERIAL :
Raw materials consist mainly of recycled raw material. The non recycled part consists mainly of poplar wood and additives (clay etc)
WIRE SECTION :
The board web is built up in several layers on endless wires from a highly diluted pulp. At this stage the board web contains over 80% water.
PRESSING SECTION :
The formed sheet is pressed mechanically to reduce the water content to 57%.
DRYING SECTION :
Drying is carried out by use of steamheated cylinders, covered with dryer fabrics and equipped with extensive ventilation systems.
INNOVATIVE ASPECT :
The innovative new TEM-SEC press, used in this project is a direct action hot press that uses a heated roll to increase after-press dryness to 53%. There is no need for special press felts or press roll covers. Developed to help paper mills cut energy costs, this press is a major technological breaktrough. It extends the technology of conventional, high impulse and wide nip presses to achieve levels of press dewatering never before possible.
