RETROFIT OF AN ALUMINIUM MELTING PLANT BY IMPLEMENTATION OF A NEW ALUMINA FEEDING SYSTEM

Cel

This project aims at the installation of a new alumina feeding system in an aluminium melting plant by retrofitting 260 electrolytic cells of 90000 Amp. each.
The results recorded (during the last 24 months) was : Current efficiency % = +2,4 (91,9 against 89,5); specific power consumption -284 kWh/t Al (13316 for 13600 before). Fluorine emission kg F /t Al = -3,4 (11,9 against 15,3); average life of Pots stopped for relining in months = +3,5 (56,4 against 52,9); Specific energy saving amounted 0,02535 TOE per t of aluminiun produced. (Directly = 0,0244196 TOE/ t Al, indirectly = 0,0004048 TOE/ t Al by decrease of fluorine's loss and 0,0005227 TOE/ t Al by increase of the life span of pots stopped for relining).
In the existing units, alumina is injected every six hours through a point located on the cell side. This feeding procedure yields a high increase in alumina concentration affecting the process efficiency. The project propose to inject alumina through two points located on the cell longitudinal axes. This feeding procedure will be controlled by computer and is comparable to the technique already applied in new plants.
Innovative aspects : retrofit of an aluminium plant by implementation of a new alumina feeding procedure controlled by computer.
