DIESEL ENGINE SUPPLY SYSTEM WITH WATER/GASOIL EMULSION FOR BUSES USED FOR URBAN TRANSPORT

Ziel

The aim of the project is the installation of a water/gasoil emulsion system on diesel engines used on urban public buses to evaluate fuel consumption decreases and polluting emission reduction. The field test will be carried out on 10 buses, 7 equipped with the emulsion system, and 3 conventional buses for comparison. It is expected to achieve a saving of 5% of the conventional consumption (1,25 TOE/year/vehicle on a vehicle with a 200 CV motor, consuming 0.50 kg/km,travelling 50000 km/year). Expected commercial payback time is 1 year.

The efficiency of the supply system of water-gasoil emulsions in heating generators for the improvement of combustion has been demonstrated with a previous demonstration (EE/281/79 - IT). With the research promoted by EEC (EEC I/201),the possibility of exploiting the system on diesel engines has been demonstrated; moreover, during the research it came out that the consumption decrease and reduction of polluting emissions tend to rise according to the increase of the unsteadiness of the engine speed. This trend has been checked during bench tests of the standard urban cycle (European cycle), in which a reduction of about 4% of the Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) has been obtained when the engine is supplied with water-gasoil emulsion. The two main components of the AGIP-Emulsystem are a mixer and an emulsifier. They can be fitted easily in the fuel system of diesel engines. In the mixer, water and gasoil are crudely mixed. This mixture is finely emulsioned through theemulsifier. The introduction of water finely mixed with fuel in the combustion chamber produces a better nebulization of the fuel itself and so a thinner mixture with burning air. A quicker and more complete combustion follows.
The bench and road tests will determine the real savings and the performance of the buses fitted with the new feeding system.
The cost of emulsion system is estimated at 1-1.2 million LIT/vehicle.
