ENERGY FROM URBAN WASTE

Ziel

Automatic sorting of urban garbage in order to obtain the optimum quantities of valuable by-products:
- a high calorific value and low chlorine content RDF.
- a pure organic fraction
- a plastic film fraction
- a metallic fraction
The energy production, in the form of RDF, amounts to 13.200 TOE/yr for the whole plant.
It appeared after some time that the scheme initially chosen was not economically satisfactory. This was due to the 1986 drop in the fossil fuel prices and to the general evolution of the economy.
Consequently, the contract was stopped at the beginning of 1988.
A new mixed private/public company has been founded to take charge of the urban waste treatment of the Liege area.
This will be done according to a modified scheme: grinding of the urban waste followed by a trommel screening. A raw combustible fraction will be produced which will be burned on-site for electricity production which will be fed into the public grid.
Some of the equipment initially installed will be used in the new scheme.
The urban waste sorting plant for the Liege area is comprised of three lines, each for the treatment of +/- 25 T/h of waste. EEC. support for the project is for one of the three lines.
The principal behind the project lies in the assembly, which has been adapted to Liege area characteristics (quantity of waste and quality, related to selective collection) of basic units already successfully in use in other european plants (an approach which can easily be adapted to other specific cases).
The main steps in the sorting process are :
- shredding of bulky components in a cutter-type crusher;
- pneumatic separation of light and heavy components by means of a zig-zag
classifier;
- separation of the light fraction into small-sized organic components, plastic film and combustible components; these combustible components (mainly paper and low content PVC plastics) are dried prior to transformation into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) pellets. The plastic film fraction is upgraded by the preparation of plastic compounds for recycling (see project EE/192/79);
- separation of the heavy fraction of the zig-zag classifier into three parts by means of a trommel, after removal of the ferrous compounds with a magnetic separator : small sized components (stones, glass, etc.), medium sized organic rich components and the trommel refuse which, although rich in combustible components, because of its variable granulometry and plastic/heavy metals content is transferred to a dumping site with the small inert components.
