RETROFIT OF AN EXISTING THERMAL POWER PLANT WITH A MHD POWER PLANT

Ziel

To perform the retrofit of an existing power plant in Ravenna with a 35 MW Magneto Hydrodynamic Generator.
The study has shown that the MHD/power plant retrofits are feasible from the technical - scientific point of view, using technologies and knowledge external to the Community, for only a very limited number of components. The feasibility is moreover assured since thermal power plants with the feature required for MHD retrofitting are existing : plant power, available space, boiler adaptibility, easy connection possibiliies with internal gas pipelines. The power plants chosen for the study is situated in Ravenna - Italy. The Italian plant efficiency, on the basis of the carried out parametric process optimization, could increase by about 5% and at the same time the present plant power could increase by more than 20 MW.
The MHD technology is an electricity generation system based on the interaction between a strong magnetic field and a plasma flow.
The magnetic field is provided by magnet coils operating at very low temperatures (4 deg. C.) and under superconductivity conditions.
The plasma consists of a working fluid using natural gas or coal combustion products containing ionizing substances such a potassium salts and heated to 3,000 K.
The plant components are constituted by a combustion chamber followed by the MHD generator consisting itself of a channel where the plasma is streaming through and a super-conductive magnet around the channel, where direct current is generated. Direct current is afterwards converted into alternative current through an inverter system. The hot plasma then flows on to a conventional boiler which produces steam to operate a turbo-generator.
The thermal power plant selected for the study is a 75 MW plant situated at Ravenna in Romagna as it possesses the features necessary for the retrofitting with a MHD generator.
The project has been divided in, the following phases :
- Optimisation of the process parameters
- Definition of the various components
- Plant layout
- Economic analysis (cost of KW installed)
- Selection of 2nd site in France
- Definition and plant layout
- Identification of European component suppliers.
The project started 30.08.83 and was completed 31.03.85 for a total cost of Lit 550 million.
