GAS TURBINE COGENERATION BY USE OF AN EXISTING BOILER

Cel

To install a natural gas fired, gas turbine generator to produce electricity: the hot exhaust gas from the turbine will be used to fire an existing boiler converted to waste heat operation to produce high pressure (43 barg) steam.
Payback is estimated at 2.4 years, and Community support is limited to the innovative part of the project, evaluated at IRL 680,000.
Difficulties have been experienced with the generator control system.
This must be modified to allow parallel running due to the poor quality of the electricity supply board's supply.
Since August 1987 the boiler ran on turbine exhaust gas and provided 80% of the site steam requirements. This represents 60% of its capacity. The boiler has been tried at 86% capacity using turbine exhaust gas.
The gas turbine generator, gas compressor and power isolating transformer became operational in August 1987.
The project will conducted over three phases:
- design and engineering
- construction and commissioning
- technical, economic evaluation and commissioning.
The work period is 16/01/86 to 31/12/88.
The project involves electricity generation with a standard gas turbine generator set and the use of the turbine exhaust gas in an existing but modified boiler.
While the process is established, the innovatory part of the project which also carries the greatest risk (and is that part supported by the Commission) lies in the successful modification of the existing boiler, with high overall cycle efficiencies.
At this, the preliminary stage, the economic risks entailed in the project are:
- that the level of cost savings will be less than forecast due to the level of technical risk involved in boiler modification, and,
- that, because of a greater than anticipated sutdown frequency, savings on electricity demand and capacity changes will not be attained.
The nominal ISO rating of the GasTurbine Generator will be 5,445 KW; the nominal MCR of the boiler at 650 psig (43 barg) and 785 F (420 C) is
137,000 lb/h (62,000 kg/h) steam. Annual Energy Output for the installation will be 42,283,000 kWh (electrical) and 249,000,000 kWh steam. The factory annual energy requirement is estimated at 42,700,000 kWh (electrical) and 322,740,000 kWh steam.
