CONVERSION OF AN OIL FIRED BOILER TO AN ATMOSPHERIC FLUIDIZED BED BOILER BURNING COAL

Objetivo

To demonstrate the economic and technical feasibility of achieving higher steam output rates from solid fuel combustion of existing water tube boiler than could be obtained by use of conventional spreader grate in an existing oil fired boiler.
This contract deals only with the construction of the boiler.

The project involves conversion of an oil fired boiler (125,000 lb /h 650 Psig. and 420 deg. C) to an atmospheric fluidized bed boiler burning coal, including provision of boiler modifications, auxiliaries, coal and limestone handling systems. The plant in question is No 4 boiler of Huddersfield Works Power Station. Two of the five boilers supplying the Works with a base load of steam have reached the end of their working lives. Loss of these is to be made good by more extensive use of No 4 boiler. Conversion to fluidized combustion will minimise oil use, allowing less expensive coals to be burned, provide 50% of the Works steam load, extending the life of the three older boilers.
The boiler is to be converted to meet the following requirements when burning Allerton Bywater washed smalls:
* Steam output 95,000 lb/h
* Steam temperature 420 deg. C +- 10 deg. C
* Steam pressure 650Psig
* Boiler efficiency 82% at MCR
* Boiler turndown 2:1
* Boiler availability 90%of any 26 month period between major overhauls inclusive of scheduled maintenance periods.
