USE OF PULVERISED COAL INSTEAD OF FUEL IN SMALL INDUSTRIAL BOILERS

Objective

To demonstrate that pulverized coal can be used in small boilers (1 to 5 mw/th) to replace fuel oil, with the same flexibility of operation (automation, handling of fuel and ash, saving of staff).
Unsatisfactory burning-out of coal particles.
Auto-heating of pulverised coal in silo
Modifications made in 1987 :
- elimination of existing pressure differences and better facilities for inertisation procedures on coal silo.
- installation of combustion air pre-heaters.
The newly designed tube boiler providing vaporized steam at 9 t/h at 11 bar and 188 C - nearly 5 MW/TH - but must be capable of operating with partial load up to 1 MW/TH. 2 burners of 500 KG/H each are used; they are designed to burn out coal fines (less than 100 microns) in a shorter flame and in a cooler enclosure than in classical pulverized fuel boilers. To achieve those coals it is necessary to eject the coal fines at a relatively low speed to leave them time to heat up in a small distance, to insure a maximal calorific action at the flame base by radiation and gas recirculation, to provoke high turbulence in the ignition zone and to protect efficiently the burner against overheating and slag deposition.
At the beginning the coal is swelling coal (29 to 31% volatiles) with low ash content (3%). The coal will be transported to the side by bulk liquid lorry and transferred pneumatically into silos avoiding any evolving of dust on the site. Due to the low output power of the plant and the clean characteristics of the fuel a sophisticated plant for collecting ashes is not necessary.
The fumes are filtered.
