Objetivo To demonstrate the viability of producing a compressed peat product, from the peat resources near the western coast of Ireland. Production of 50,000 T/y of peat pellets is projected. The plant was successfully commissioned, the moisture of the peat being reduced from 55% to 20%. Project appears viable providing there are average weather conditions for peat harvesting. The project involves the incineration, drying, pelletising and briquetting of peat. The peat will be dried in a flash dryer using gas produced in a fluidised bed incinerator at a temperature of 900 -950 deg. C. The dryer is designed to produce dried milled peat at 8. 2 T/h or 50,000 T/y, allowing industrial scale production on smaller bogs. There have been delays in the project due to financing and management problems.
