DOUBLE ENVELOPE PASSIVE SOLAR SPACE HEATING SYSTEM

Objetivo

Demonstrate the commercial viability of passive solar collection in the privately owned house market. Show additional gains from a fan assisted air collection system. Study the effect of a thermal mass and the physiological effect on inhabitants.
Taking the totality of auxiliary energy input from all sources during the period of 21 days prior to the 23rd March 1984: a cold late Winter,
an average figure of 51. 1 kWhr/day indicates an average flow of under 2. 3 kW.
This is clearly remarkable for a large house with a larger than average family in full time occupation, and at a stage where more than average energy use is to be expected.
If we compare Summer use in the period prior to 2nd July at 29.
1 kWhr/day we see that the Winter use was only 26 kWhr/day higher argues for a net energy input of 1. 08 kW. Overall energy consumption during the winter season of 5 months averages 49 kWh /day. This double envelope design has great promise for replication. The overcost of 2400 UKL is recovered in about 6 years for this project. (See SE/560/86/FR)
Two semi-detached houses (one of them wood stove heated) characterised by
- construction as "home within a house" using the thermal mass of the building fabric as storage
- direct gains through south facing windows
- active air collectors
- fresh air suction in Summer by thermosyphon induced ventilation through the selectively coated air collectors
- back-up heating system.
The south facing wall is covered by toughened plastic sheeting 4 cms away from the collector itself. The collector is heated by the suns rays and the air therein is subsequently heated and ducted by natural thermosyphon upwards over the top of the first floor rooms and then down inside the north wall. It passes below the ground floor and back up across the south face. The inside walls act as thermal storage. A fan is placed in the circuit to ensure circulation of the air.
During the Summer months the air is ducted to the loft where it is exhausted.
