PV POWERED FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

Ziel

To demonstrate remote PV powered systems, which collect, analyse and record data to give early warning of forest fires.
After several improvements made during the test phase, the photovoltaic system has proven to be a reliable energy source for any remote, stand-alone system.
Marketing efforts on international basis are still needed for the introduction of the forest fire detection unit to the competent forest authorities.
A PV powered fire alarm unit installed in the forest of Sulmona Valley, will be able to quickly detect fires within a range of tens of kilometres, and thus help prevent catastrophic forest fires.
The fire alarm system is powered by a 396 Wp array of 12 monocrystalline Helios Technology modules of type H 436/1, coupled to Varta lead acid batteries of type VB 2306 which provide 300 Ah storage at 24V. This provides for 8 days continuous operation with no sun. The fire alarm system consists of one infrared camera which is mounted on a pedestal and rotates to scan the appropriate field of view. The image produced by the camera is transmitted by a radio link to a micro-computer, where software picks out high temperature spots on the image and gives an alarm signal. The micro-computer can also control the movement of the camera. The camera drive motors and camera itself are powered by the PV generator whilst the computer and radio receiver/transmitter at the receiving station are mains powered.
The system was monitored for two years in accordance with the JRC monitoring guidelines.
