USE OF A NOVEL ELECTRONIC TURBINE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR IMPROVED SMALL HYDRO ELECTRIC PLANTS

Objetivo

To use a new electronic turbine control system to operate in response to head and flow variations to allow high efficiency operation of a single, double-controlled, s-type, Kaplan turbine over a wide load range.
The unit was commissioned in september 1985 and produced 888,760 kwh and 1,162,130 kwh in its first and second years respectively. Severe fluctuations in the flow over ;these two years accounted for the variation in the output. The estimated average annual output is 1,050,000 kwh. The electronic control unit could not be tested initially due to the extreme flow condition but is now operating successfully. Excesive debris has caused many problems and additional racks have been fitted. Despite the lower outputs the unit has operated successfully at very low flow.
The site is an abandoned installation with an existing weir.
The s-type, Kaplan turbine has the following design features;
- Head 3. 2 m
- Flow 9. 25 m3/s
- Output 241 kw
- Speed 200 rev/min
The generator is gearbox driven and has the following parameters;
- Rating 280 kw
- Voltage 400 v, 50 hz
- Speed 760 rev/min
The electricity generated is supplied to the local supply authority at a 10 kv interconnection point.
