Objetivo The aim of the project is to develop a geothermal source for a multiple use space heating scheme in the town of Grosseto. The use of geothermal water from two existing wells to cover 50% of the heating requirements of a 1 hectare greenhouse, a swimming pool and 4500 accommodation units in Grosseto will, according to the final design, make it possible to save some 2380 toe/year of primary energy and write off expenditure in ten years. The project is aimed at achieving energy savings of approximately 50 to 60% by comparison with a traditional heating boiler system. Given that the fuel used is methane gas and that the cost per calorie of this fuel is approximately two-thirds of that of the heating oil traditionally used for local heating, the savings become quite considerable. The two geothermal wells produce 700 mc/hour (180+520) of water, the flow of which is assisted by a pump, at a temperature of 40 to 45 deg. C. The installed potential capacity of 20 MWt ensures that the waste water temperature is 15 deg. C.The geothermal water will be used in gas-driven heat pumps for collective central heating by means of a distribution network 2000 metres in length and in simple heat exchangers for agricultural uses.
