DEVELOPMENT OF THE SERRES LOW ENTHALPY GEOTHERMAL FIELD

Obiettivo

To use geothermal energy 40830 MWh to cover 30 - 60% of the heating requirements for a group of existing flats at Serres. A primary energy saving of 1580 TOE/year is expected. Corresponding payback period is 9 years.
Exploration well was unsuccessful. The target has not been explored. Geothermal gradient is lower than expected but no explanation yet can justify this anomaly.
The geothermal reservoir to be tapped lies at a depth of 2500 m and is made up of deltaic sand, conglomerates (lefkon formation-miocene).
This formation extends at the south of Serres city in quaternary graben filled with lacustrine sediments.
Recent oil exploration wells have resulted in estimates of the following characteristics for the reservoir :
Productive thickness - 100 m, transmissivity - 30 darcy m, well head temperature - 72 deg.C salinity - 8 g/l.
Pump assisted flowrate - 150 m3/h. At present there are no plans for a reinjection well.
The well was drilled in June-July 1987 down to 2007 m. Geological formations crossed are sands and clays interjected by limestone veins. The recorded temperature value was 55 deg. C at 2007 m depth, indicating a very low geothermal gradient of 1,78 deg. C/100 m which is lower than expected (2,25/100 m). At this point the decision was taken to stop the drilling, before running the 9"5/8 casing to 2007 and deepening the well to 2700 m.
