GEOTHERMAL ENERGY TO HEAT GREENHOUSES

Objective

To use geothermal energy to heat an area of 20 ha of greenhouses at Pantani (80 km NW of Rome). It was estimated that the energy saving will be 5000 TOE/y. The geothermal reservoir, lying in karstified limestones of the Lower Lias, was traversed (in 1966) between 350 and 600 m marks when a high enthalpy exploration well (P1) was drilled. Estimated reservoir potential -360 m3/h at 55 deg. and a salinity of 3 g/l, with CO2 present.
The project provides for drilling a well (P2) to 600 m depth. The distance between P1 and P2 is 700 m. If necessary, a 9 5/8" filter screen will be installed below 500 m.
Following production tests and analysis of the characteristics of the fluid, the intention is to build the 5000 m3 isothermal reservoirs and lay out a piping network for distributing heat to 10 ha of glasshouses to be supplied by P1 and 10 ha of glasshouses to be supplied by P2.
There are no plans for a reinjection well; the fluid will be discharged at the surface at a temperature of 30deg.
The project is successful with an energy saving of 20,000 TOE/y expected during 1988. The payback of 8 years should be largely achieved and about 52 ha of greenhouses should be constructed providing work for at least 500 workers. The artesian flow measured in P1 (1966) is now non-existant and one of the two new wells drilled in 1984 is devoted to reinjection in order to maintain a sufficient pressure in the aquifer.
To define the precise structural position of the Karstic limestone reservoir, a geophysical survey had been carried out. The production well was drilled to a final depth of 665 m betwen May and November 1983. The reservoir extends from 341 to 470 m and comprises mainly limestone fractured and Karstified.
A casing 13 3/8" is set and cemented from 0 to 260 m a 9 5/8" casing screened at the base run from 260 to 393 m, due to total losses during drilling. The well is an open hole from 393 m.
A pumping test performed with a submerged pump at 140 m showed the following characteristics: no artesian production; pumping flow-rate - 245 m3/h; drawdown - 67 m; temperature - 48 deg C; salinity 3 g/l. With such a low salinity level, there was no immediate need for a reinjection well.
