ENERGY SAVING INDUCTION HEATED CERAMIC GALVANIZING PLANT USING MOLTEN ZINC AS THE COOLANT FOR TRANSFORMERS

Objective

The aim is the development and demonstration of an energy-saving hot dip galvanizing plant. The following components are to be examined in detail : travel drying oven; a highly insulated ceramic galvanizing pot; a semisubmersible zinc-cooled inductor and a sliding insulation cover for the pot. An energy saving of about 300 Kwh/t of charging material is to be expected. On average, this corresponds to a 10% reduction in the energy requirement of galvanizing plants.
Electricity as a source of energy for melting the zinc was found to be too slow so an oil-fired heater was installed. Unfortunately the bracket on which this was mounted collapsed. It was then found that severe cracks in the ceramic brickwork had occured. Some of the brickwork and fibre reinforced ceramic concrete were taken down and it was found that the double layer of bonded ceraboards had been torn apart leaving open cracks to the insulation and steel casing. It appears that due to a misunderstanding on the part of the bricklayers, no mortar was used between the steel casing and the insulating plates. The problems arose when the zinc, weighing 40 tons, was added to the pot. The entire ceramic lining may have to be replaced.
The transforners are expected to yield between 38 and 40 kw at a power factor greater than 0.8 but it has not yet been possible to prove this.
Induction heated ovens have been known for a long period of time, with forced air cooled windings and with the inductors as an integral part of the oven. This leads to complicated vulnerable constructions in which one cannot utilise a first class insulation.
To produce an inductor which uses the molten material as coolant, which entails that the inductor can be supplied as separate units to already existing plants and thereby giving a definite power saving compared to prevailing heating methods for top heated furnaces at a reasonable expenditure. These pots are normally gas or oil fired.
The high insulated pot could be installed everywhere in new installations or where existing pots have to be replaced.
