COMBINED CYCLE DIESEL/STEAM TURBINE COGENERATION PLANT WITH AFTER BURNING ON HEAT RECOVERY

Cel

The main objectives of the project are :
- production of additional electrical (9 MW) and thermal (34 MW) energy with high efficiency through a combined Diesel/steam cycle using an high turbulence post combustion system and a back pressure steam turbine.
- amelioration of the environmental impact through a significant reductions of solid, liquid and gaseous pollutants in the flue gas.
- improvement of the overall flexibility of the plant through a less rigid ratio between the thermal and the electrical production.

The original cogeneration plant "Le Valette" consisted of three Diesel engines (fuelled with heavy oil) with the relevant heat recovery boilers for a total capacity of 22 electric MW plus 22 thermal MW; with the recovered thermal energy, hot water for the district heating network was produced.
In order to increase the electrical and the thermal capacity of the plant as well as to reduce the pollutants emission to the environment, a combined cycle has been designed based on an innovative high turbulence post combustion system installed downstream the Diesel engines.
The heat recovery section of the post combustion system mow produces superheated steam (36 bar, 290 deg. C) which is feed to a back pressure steam turbine able to produce 9,05 electric MW plus 34,3 thermal MW as hot water for the district heating network.
The expected energy savings is 5843 TOE/year whilst the gaseous and liquid pollutants (CO, CxHy) in the flue gas will be nearly completely eliminated and the particulates ones significantly reduced via afterburning.
