DEMONSTRATION OF A WIND FARM OPERATING ON A COMPLEX AND UNEAVEN TERRAIN IN MOUNTAIN SITE

Objectif

To design manufacture and demonstrate the operation of a 1,3 MW windfarm in a complex terrain using an uprated version of the MEDIT WT of Aeritalia.
Innovation lies on the new 320 kW WT for windfarm application.
Site selection is referred as promising due to a measured average speed about 6 m/sec. No problems are referred.
4 new AERITALIA made wind turbines of the type MEDIT MK2, 320 kW, derived from the prototype by uprating the electrical power output and by modifying the design of its major subsystems will be installed together with 3 WTs of 30 kW type ART03 within a wind farm at Bisaccia in the Campania region in Italy. Main modifications compared to the first MEDIT machine are : horizontal positioning of the generators, increased bladelength to 16 m, teetewed hub, 26 m steel tower, variable pitch control, electric yaw system and other improvements resulting to a new WT design. At the site the AMWS is estimated to 5,8 m/s and the annual yield of all WTs is 2650 MWh. During the two years of demonstration it will be possible to evaluate the performance of the new WTs. The estimated payback period for this project is 11 years and is expected to be reduced whenever the WTs will be produced in series. Community's financial support is given only for one WT and the design of the entire wind farm.
