175 KW KARPATHOS ISLAND WIND POWER PLANT

A medium size, 175 kW wind turbine for operation in parallel with the existing diesel grid of Karpathos Island. A substantial quantity of oil will be substituted by wind energy feeding a small grid powered by diesel generators. The annual electricity output is estimated at 670 MWh.
The wind turbine was installed and commissioned in February 1987. From 17.02.87 to 30.06.87 the machine generated about 84 MWh. There were some technical problems such as a broken yaw pinion and a broken blade (one out of three). The WT was back in operation on 27.08.1988. During the five years of WT operation, it never produced more than 8% of the estimated production. This was both due to mechanical failure, and due problems related with the weak grid. Although technically and financially the project was not successful. PPC gained experience on the connection of medium WTs in weak grids, which was used in several subsequent projects in Greece.
A 24.8 m diameter, 175 KW HMZ (BE) wind turbine has been constructed and is operating in parallel with the existing 5 MW grid of the Karpathos Island. It is a 3-bladed upwind wind turbine with reinforced fiberglass blades turned into the wind by the active yawing system. A positive blade pitch system among others allows the operation of the wind turbine in a large range of windspeeds and avoids overcharge of the generator and rotational overspeeding.
The asynchronous generator is connected in parallel to the grid by way of a low tension panel. A comprehensive system for measuring, regulating and controlling is also provided.
The estimated annual yield is 670 MWh as at the site the annual mean wind velocity is 8 m/s. The cost per unit generated by the wind turbine is estimated at 8,3 Dra while the conventional cost on the island is 14 Dra. Thus the payback time of the demo project is 9 years which can be reduced to 7 years if several installations were built.
