COMPLIANT MONOTOWER FOR OIL/GAS PRODUCTION IN DEEP WATER MARGINAL FIELDS

Objectif

Development of systems which should render economically attractive the exploitation of numerous oil and gas marginal fields in deep water up to 1,000 m. w. d.
The results obtained during the development of the compliant monotower research project allow to assert its global feasibility for the exploitation of deep water hydrocarbon fields.
In particular we can assert the feasibility of the following three systems configuration :
- an axial piled compliant tower for exploitation of hydrocarbon fields in water depth from 270. /. 320 m to 500. /. 550 m with conventional completion and operating deck weight up to 25000 t
.
- a flexible tower for exploitation of hydrocarbon fields in w. d
. ranging from 500. /. 550 m up to 800 m with conventional completion and operating deck weight up to 25000 t.
- a monopile for exploitation of gas fields in water depth from 270. /. 300 m up to 800 m with underwater wellhead and operating deck weight up to 25000 t.
From an economic point of view the compliant monotowers appear very attractive due to their low structural weight.
In particular the costs of the installed structure compared with other alternatives developed for similar scenarios (as conventional jackets and TLPs) evidentiated the competitiveness of the compliant monotower in the overall range of technical applicability of the concept with the maximum advantage in the range of 350. /. 650 m w . d.
During the project development the following main critical components have been identified and defined at a feasibility level : Reins, grouted connections, transition module and foundation template.
For the actual applicability of the concepts detailed studies will be required in the following areas :
- the qualification of the high or very high strength steel needed in the reins, for the configurations which require axial piles;
- the new configuration of the grouted connections of reins or columns which allows a more efficient transfer of very high axial loads.
Transition module and the new configuration of the grouted connections are patent pending.
Study, design and model testing of new concepts of structures, the COMPLIANT MONOTOWER, proposed for oil and gas production from marginal fields in very deep waters up to 1,000 m. w. d.
The basic concept is a very slender and flexibile structure, with complete structural continuity from the seabed to the sea surface . Such structural continuity allow a certain number of conductors to run along the structures as in a conventional fixed platform and the possibility to put the wellheads on the deck surface, with strong benefit of the operation maintenance process. The project is subdivided into two phases :
PHASE 1 includes : . a general technical-economic system analysis; the study of the structural configurations together with the development of the procedures of analysis and computer program; the preliminary design of the monotower and definition of the installation/operation procedure.
PHASE 2 includes : . final configurations definitions and analysis; execution of model tests and comparison of theoretical and experimental results; final definition of the installation /operation procedures; issue of final design documentation.
