COMPLETION OF HORIZONTAL DRAINS

Cel

The object of this project is to determine the techniques, equipment and procedures specific to horizontal wells regarding both the acquisition and interpretation of field data and the means of achieving the appropriate well completion. Considering the field heterogeneties encountered by the drain, its optimized exploitation may require the implementation of a selective completion providing the possibility of chosing the production areas.
a) ENGINEERING OF HORIZONTAL DRAINS
MEASUREMENTS
- Determination of the section of a horizontal drain. Tests run on a test bench showed that a measuring equipment of the SHDT type provided diameters by defect within an error rate of 8%, which is rather important and needs to be taken into account when restituting the shape and the volume of the drain.
- The study on sonds transport means in a well fitted with its tubing (where methods using SIMPHOR type strings cannot be applied) has led to the choice of two methods "PUMP OUR STINGER" and "COILED TUBING CONVEYED". Both were tested with success.
- A test bench has allowed to test the measurements made by bottomhole flowmeters under horizontal diphasic flow conditions. It revealed that to be properly interpreted, these measures required additional data on parameters such as the water content of the fluid and the nature of the flow.
INTERPRETATION METHODS
These studies should provide a better comprehension and quantification of the evolution of the well and reservoir parameters while producing with horizontal drains.
- The interpretation of well tests provides us with data on the vertical and horizontal permeabilities near the well and on the residual skin. Analytic and numerical models have been adapted to the specific case of horizontal wells. These models have to be confirmed on actual data.
- A study on the evolution of the interfaces provides today easy analytic methods for the preliminary studies of specific cases and numerical models have also been studied in detail for the examination of real cases. Regarding the reservoir, this allows to predict the production before and after the breakthrough, the breakthrough duration, the critical flowrate, etc.
- Regarding the knowledge of the lateral evolution of the geological characteristics of the reservoirs, studies enabled a preliminary evaluation of the influence of the horizontality on the measures made by logging tools and provided specifications allowing to recalibrate the logging sequences with the cores.
b) COMPLETION
Cementing : to perform a hole-layer interface taking into account the variations of the characteristics of the reservoir, the liner has been cemented then perforated according to chosen zones. An important number of laboratory studies and tests showed the possibility of achieving a correct liner cementation while modifying the formulation of the slurries, the rheological stresses with the spacer, the positioning scheme.
Another possibility of sectioning the drain is to use external packers. Here again, experience has proved the feasibility. The problem was to reduce the risks of damaging the packers during their descent and to find an efficient positioning procedure. Regarding the well equipment, studies have also been carried out in view to complete with appropriate internal production equipment the selectivity made by the liner. Very rare are the possibilities really applicable.
The project has been divided in two main phases, a study or engineering phase and a completion phase.
The object of the engineering phase is to determine the means regarding the acquisition and interpretation of field data around a well. These are characterized by two main elements, production measurements or logs and interpretation methods.
Regarding the first element, an attempt will be made to obtain a number of measurements and their interpretation while considering the particular feature of the horizontal flow. As for the second element, an attempt will be made, first, to schematize the horizontal variations of the geological characteristics of the reservoir and to interprete and model the well tests and production with or without interface.
The completion phase is more technological and its object consists in making a selective completion.
Depending on the nature of the reservoir, the liner can be either cemented and slotted or separated in several preslotted sections by means of special equipment. Both systems constitute the first two studies of this phase. In order to improve production conditions, an attempt will also be made to find the means of simulating and treating such a drain. Last of all, and in as much as possible, all these results will be finalized or confirmed by real in-well tests.
