DRILLING AUTOMATION (PART 1)

Ziel

The final purpose of this project is the full automation of the drilling operation. The aim of the part 1 is to obtain the individual automation of main components such as screwing and unscrewing machine for the drilling string, handling of triple, and power-swivel.
Phase 1 was completed by the end of 1985 on a drilling site in the south of France with simultaneous test runs on the following equipment :
- an automated drill pipe spinner (BIL-K). This equipment is ready to be commercialized with automatic control directly on the machine.
- an automatic slips system (BIL-PACK). This equipment is already commercialized.
- a machine for the automatic hooking and racking at the derrick hooking platform (UPPER BIL-STAB). This equipment has to be automated within the contract TH 02.29/85.
- a machine for the racking of thribbles at the feet of the derrick (LOWER BIL-STAB). This equipment has to be automated within the contract TH 02.29/85
Phase 2 comprised the study of an automation allowing semi-automatic drilling and the study of a band-brake servo system. However, the latter cannot be adapted to the various band brakes existing on the market.
Phase 3 consisted in fabricating and testing at the workshop an electric power-swivel prototype. The resistance of this equipment proved to be very satisfactory. This equipment will be completed with handling systems and overall tested within the scope of contract TH 02.29/85.
The project is divided into three phases :
Phase 1 - Automation of screwing and racking in the derrick.

For the screwing and unscrewing machine new sensors (centering over of the rotating table, positionning over the tool joint, torque measurement, rotation accounting, ...) are to be developed and connected to a programmable automat. In additions the automatic racking of triple at the levels of the drilling floor and the upper racking platform, is obtained with two remote-controlled automatic machines.
Phase 2 - Semi-automatic drilling.

This phase is directed to a better knowledge of three important parameters directly applied on the drilling tool : the weight, the torque and the rotating speed. Specific sensor are to be developed.
Phase 3

Electrical drive of the power swivel including the development of a new reducting gear box, refrigeration, ... with study and tests of components.
