NEW LINING TECHNOLOGIES FOR DRILLING AND PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT

Objetivo

This project consits in developing a method allowing to deposit on drilling and production equipment, a product presenting mechanical characteristics (resistance to abrasion and shocks) superior to those of tungstene carbide and slightly inferior to those of the diamond, a synthetic polycristalline, of equivalent cost or even less expensive than tungstene carbide.
PHASE 1 - Fundamental study
The study of direct deposition of boron carbide onto steel has been completed, as well as the exploitation of new diffusion barrier samples.
The deposition of doped boron carbide is stopped on the fundamental point of view, but will be completed in a hot wall LPCVD micropilot.
PHASE 2 - Construction of a pilot unit
The LPCVD pilot unit is now installed in Saint Etienne. The study of boron carbide coatings will soon be performed.
The PACVD plant produces DLC coatings with mechanical properties are too weak to resist to an industrial application at the moment.
PHASE 3/4 - In-cell and on-site tests
A drilling test pilot has been realized in order to test the coating in good conditions.
The project consists in achieving a pilot unit allowing to process a great number of elements, within conditions representative of an industrial manufacture.
The number of parts to be treated and their diversity require an important number of tests within various domains involved in the oil industry : drilling (progress test, wear test) and production (erosion and abrasion test, corrosion tests) Parallel to the pilot assembling and test surveys, the project also includes a fundamental study covering the physical and chemical analysis of the constituents of the lining, the texture of the deposit, and the interaction between the deposit and the different substrata studied.
The project comprises 4 phases:
PHASE 1 - Fundamental study:
Systematic study of deposit parameters (temperature, pressure, gaz nature, flowrates, proportions of mixtures), by characterising the structural properties of the products (nature of phases, interaction with substratum, deposit, balance diagram...) by determining the mechanical properties and the correlations between the structural properties and the mechanical properties.
PHASE 2 - fabrication of pilot unit:
These tasks will consist, depending on the database deriving from the fundamental study, in determining the adequate instrumentation, in computing the thermal capacities of the kilns and in optimising working parameters so to elaborate the equipment which will be tested later on a real site.
PHASE 3 - Manufacture of prototypes :
The pilot unit allows application of hard lining on real size prototypes specially made for the cell and in-situ tests: drill bits, stabilizers, tool-joints, swiveling equipment, nozzles, cutting tools, cutting plates.
PHASE 4 - On-site tests
Prototype elements are first tested on cells or test benches, so to minimise the risk of interrupting a drill by presenting an equipment, whose reliability would not have been previously tested.
