REHABILITATION OF AN OLD HYDRO SCHEME USING A KAPLAN TURBINE MODIFIED TO REDUCE CAVITATION

Obiettivo

- Setting up an innovative design of semi-Kaplan turbine covered with a superalloy (FeCoNi) that allows a higher situation of the machine, reducing the costs of the civil works and the maintenance costs.
- Installation of a new management system to increase the production, based on spectral analysis to control the running conditions (cavitation, vibration...).
- Adjusting of the civil works to the environmental existing conditions to preserve the ecologic level of the area.
- Development of the project in a intracommunitary cooperation between the French Company NEYRPIC and the Spanish Companies NEYRPIC ESPAGNOLA and CERSA (NAVARRO GROUP).
The Power Station was completely finished in January 1993, but it did not work until March 1993, due to the lack of water. It began to work in March, although there was not flow enough for a conventional turbine to allow this installation to work under the minimum cavitation thershold.
The commercial exploitation of the Power Station began on April 1993.
The Cavitation system has allowed the working of the Power station at low charges, in water scarce periods, thanks to the fact of the complete control on the working conditions of the machine with the additional security of the anticavitation lining of the blades of the wheels and the waist.
Since the point of view of the owner of the Power Station, we consider that the project has been successful and it can be very useful for the exploitation of the Power Station because it allows :
- Preventive maintenance of the installation being able to programme the stops depending on the water circulating in the river, avoiding losses of production.
- Telediagnostic of the equipment : it allows to make the diagnostic of the installation at distance via telephone, radio or bearing waves.
- More resistance to the cavitation of the wheels.
- More security of the reliability in the working of the installation due to the permanent following made by the SEMYD equipment.
The operation cost of the SEMYD system is insignificant due to the low consumption of energy of the equipment.
The life time of an Hydropower Station of this type is more than 25 years.
Recuperation of an old power station fully integrated in the natural environment, preserving its original conditions with regard to present ecological environment and touristic values.
The turbine rollers protected with a super alloy linning (FeCoNi) on the blades and other parts of the turbine. This allows its installation at a higher level with relation to down stream water level.
Significant saving in the central civil works.
Possibility of examination and maintenance without using the suction pump.
More resistance to cavitation.
Improvements in production and performance through the use of a cavitation detector and vibrator coordinated with the level regulator (with regard to the water level down stream and machinery conditions over the opening limit of the distributor).
Conditions monitoring and telediagnostic possibilities
The context is the field of the hydroelectrical energy production.
The average estimated annual production during a normal hydraulic year is of 3,650,000kWh (electric kWh).
The cost of energy produced is the estimated overcost compared to conventional equipment (this overcost is for the first realization. In the future, it will probably be reduced) is near the 15%.
