NEW SYSTEM FOR PRODUCING C02 WITH COGENERATION OF STEAM AND ELECTRICITY BY MEANS OF NATURAL GAS MOTORS

Ziel

Save energy by use of combined heat/power gas engine in the CO2 production industry.
To replace present CO2 production process consisting on traditional steam boilers using coke by 3 natural gas cogeneration units supplying steam, used for the process and 3840 kW of electric power, from wich 2715 kW goes to the public network (22 GWh/y).
Innovation : To produce CO2 by cogeneration.
Commercial and technical success. Actual savings arc 0,258 TOE/T CO2 comparing to 0,31 TOE/T CO2 as it has initially been estimated.
Stage I - CO2 production cogeneration plant project
No detail engineering or purchase management was foreseen.
Stage II - Engine & equipment construction
Some auxiliary equipment was not included in the study.
Stage III - Assembly in workshop
Part of the installation was carried out by the installer and not by the supplier, as originally foreseen. The supplier made a discount on the initial price.
Stage IV - Installation & start-up
The civil works due to the pecualirities of the land, the interconnections between the engines and the manufacturing process are the main causes for the increment.
Stage V - Follow-up of plant in exploitation
A control of the expenses has not been carried out in the operation of the installation.
This is the installation of a modular cogenerating system that produces CO2, electric energy and steam.
The basic objective of the installation is to produce CO2 that is obtained from the natural gas combustion fumes, after passing through the absorption systems.
In the exhaust gases, the percentage of CO2 is 14,36% in weight.
Power is supplied by three 16 cylinder motors that use natural gas as fuel. Said motors, called WAUKESHA VHP P9390-GSI, have benn specifically designed for this type of application, where high reliability is required.
The cogeneration modules connect, in parallel, with the public electric energy supply system, to which the produced energy is sold.
The utilization of thermal energy derives from the cooling water of the motor and the exhaust gases and is done by means of a heat recuperator that delivers steam at 0,9 bar.
In accordance with steam consumption readings taken by the user, this consumption is, at all times, greater than the steam given by the operating units, and thus is not a limiting factor of the power to be supplied by the units, depending exclusively on the demand for CO2.
