REVITALISATION AND ENERGY OPTIMISATION OF THREE ABANDONED HYDRO PLANTS IN VERY POLLUTED RIVER USING KAPLAN TURBINES

Obiettivo

The aim of this project is to re-exploit three abandoned hydro plants in series on the river Deva over a distance of 925 m by concentrating the existing potentials (three) on two plants. Because of the heavily polluted river water it is foreseen to use Kaplan S-tube turbines with runners from special alloy and innovative materials for the hermetic seals of the joints between the hub and the windings of the runners. The expected energy output is 6297 MWh per annum and the estimated payback is 6 years.
The implementation of the hydroelectric BARRENA-BERRI plant was made in December 1991 and that of the plants of AITZETARTE and LAUPAGO in November 1992.
Until now running can be considered smooth with respect to the hours of performance, return and stipulated productions.
The return from the facilities is the stipulated one initially, being complied the fundamental aim of the project : production of electrical energy.
Three existing, manned hydroelectric powerstations are to be replaced by two new powerstations which will contain turbines designed to cope with the heavily polluted water in the river. The Kaplan, S-tube turbines will have runners made from a special alloy and the hermetic seals between the hub and the blades will be made of innovative materials.
Site 1 Site 2
Net head 9.6 m 4.63 m
Flow 7 m3/s 7 m3/s
Output power 1011 kW 238 kW
The energy from the two sites will be passed to the grid via a connection at 30 kV.
