PV SYSTEM FOR RURAL EXPLOITATIONS

Objetivo

Introduction of pv systems for water pumping and electrification of rural housing in areas with a large potential market. Economics of two lighting options have been been compared ac low consumption lamps versus dc lamps. (The comparison involves investment cost for inverter, availability of dc components, maintenance cost, light quality, ecc).
Technical results : Main result was the fact, that 24 rural users now dispose of 220 V ac-electricity without grid connection and without permanently running Diesel generators.
The supply of 220 V ac electricity has proved to be much better than an electrification with 24 V dc supply (easier maintenance). Many of the AMBAR inverters failed (cos-Phi cards) and had to be repaired and replaced.
Economical results : The estimated cost of electricity is 4 ECU/kWh (3 ECU/kWh for replication).
Subsidies of 49% of the eligible costs are too low for low income users. With proper maintenance the systems are expected to operate for years to come, but financing of maintenance and insurance (high lightning danger!) is problematic.
