UPLAND WINDFARM AT MYNYDD GORDDU WALES

Objective

To demonstrate a viable windfarm development in a rugged upland area of Britain having a high mean windspeed.
The project will demonstrate the achievable costs and performance of windfarms built and operated in such a location. Any effects of the severe wind regime on the windfarm will be identified. Infrastructures costs and difficulties of accessing such remote upland sites will be quantified.
The project will demonstrate the achievement of a cooperative development having a high degree of landowner involvement, and making use of locally based skills and contractors wherever possible.

The project is an undertaking to design, construct and operate a windfarm of 6 MW capacity. The wind turbines used will be medium size wind turbines proven design and cost-effectiveness. Twelve wind turbines will be deployed in a compact layout on a well-exposed hill-top site. The development will be planned and executed in close association with the landowners and making use of local skills and contractors wherever possible.
The project is innovative in that it utilities technology proven on flatter, lower wind speed sites implements its rugged upland site of high speed and topographically complex flow. Access to the site is from narrow country lanes and lay involve additional expenditure. Operation and maintenance procedures for this remote and testings site will need to be thorough, and regular monitoring and routine maintenance will be handled from a local base.
THE SITE MYNYDD GORDHU :
The site is located in West Wales, UK, near the small town of Tal-Y-Bont to the NE of Aberystwyth. The site is centred on Grid Reference SN665870. The site is in county Dyfed, and the relevant local electricity utility is Manweb.
The hill-top site currently used for grazing sheep, and the activity will continue during and after construction of the windfarm. The area of the hill-top used for the windfarm lies within the 270m height contours, the peak of the site being at 311m.
Access to the site is through the farm Mynydd Gorghu, accessed off the B-road from the A487 to Bont-Goch. A tarmac road leads to the farm, from which a shortfarm track leads up to the hill top. This farm track could be improved to provide the main site access. If this proves difficult, an alternative access could be made from the direction of Ty'n-Y-Ffynnon where the gradient is somewhat less step.
