Objectif (i) To build and operate a windfarm on an economic basis in a high moorland area in the UK.(ii) To gain knowledge of the problems inherent in planning, constructing and operating a 9,2 MW windfarm so that the process can be repeated more cost effectively in the future, both by the proposers and others within the EEC.(iii) To dissimulate, as widely as possible, the knowledge gained from the project to enable the further practical development of wind energy technology throughout the EEC.(iV) To gain knowledge of the modified version of the VESTAS controller used in the latest generation WD 34 400KW wind turbine.The wind farm was installed in the first half of 1993. The availability in 1994 reached 99,5%, with a mean wind speed of 8,66 cm/sec and a production of 30,88 GWh, well above expectations.An active dissemination programme including site visits, media activities, and presentations has been undertaken.2.1 The size for the project is Ovenden Moor in West Yorkshire, 9 kilometres north of Halifax at an elevation of 280 to 450 metres. 2.2 The site and surrounding countryside is within the upland area of the South Pennines, and is characterized by undulating hills of open moorland overlying sandstone.2.3 The Wind Resource for the site is as follows :the annual mean wind speed is estimated to be 8.5 metres/second at 30 metres over the summit of the site.the annual average wind speed duration curve may be represented by a Weibull distribution with a shape parameter K = 1.85 and a scale parameter C = 1.122.4 The windfarm will consist of 23 WD34 400 KW wind turbines, manufactured by Vestas DWT of Denmark, giving a total installed capacity of 9.2 MW.Each of the turbines will be 32 metres high and the rotor diameter which will be 34.8 metres. They will be painted steel sheet in a manner which blends with the background.2.5 A major dissemination programme will be undertaken to publicise the erection and operation of the windfarm.
