PASSIVE HUMIDITY-CONTROLLED VENTILATION FOR EXISTING DWELLINGS

Obiettivo

The aim of this project is to use ducts of already existing dwellings in order to insure ventilation of all their rooms by passive draught using means that enable to :
- adapt the airflows to the need;
- regularize effects of passive draught which is very fluctuant.

The existing building stock has normally a natural ventilation system or no ventilation system. The retrofitting of existing buildings leads in many cases to a better airtightness (due to new windows,. . . ) and lower ventilation rates due to which there are more condensation and mould growth problems.
One can conclude on the one side that there is a need to optimise the ventilation control which combines a better indoor air quality with minimum energy use and on the other hand that the occupants have difficulties to realise such an optimal ventilation.
Buildings chosen for experiment : existing collective buildings equipped with ducts for air renewing in the technical rooms ( kitchen, bathroom, WC. . . ) by natural draught.
For global ventilation of these dwellings air inlets are mounted on the facades of their main rooms (sleeping-rooms and living-rooms) and the air inlet ducts in their technical rooms are stopped up; thus, the air will circulate in every dwelling from the mainrooms to the technical rooms. Characteristics of the process
The air inlets of the main rooms and the air outlets mounted on the existing evacuation ducts are HUMIDITY-CONTROLLED; their crossing sections will drift to reducing themselves automatically when the relative humidity of the dwellings will diminish and vice versa
. The more it will be cold during the heating season, the more air will be dry in the dwellings, and the thermal draught will be stronger. Thus the humidity-controlled air inlets and air outlets will oppose more resistance to the airflow when thermal draught is stronger. Thus one obtains an effect of regulation which will avoid racing of the ventilation, and insure a good distribution amongst all the floors.
As the ambiant humidity in a dwelling depends (amongst others) on the number of occupants and their activities, the HUMIDITY -CONTROLLED process will adapt ventilation to the needs and thus avoid waste of energy.
