BREWERY BOILER HOUSE ELIMINATION BY MEANS OF PROCESS INTEGRATION IN BREWHOUSE/RACKING DEPARTMENT

Ziel

Application of the princh technology study to optimize production and uses of energy in an existing medium sized brewery. The integration of process and energy recoveries allow a potential of energy savings of 48 %. Two cogeneration plants with gas engines of 350 kW each, a new 2,5 MW thermal oil boiler, heat exchangers for the recovery of mash and wort copper waste heat and 3 stratification tanks for the recuperated heat will replace an old 16 t/h steam boilers. Reclaimed heat will cover 95 % of the heat demand and excepted for the sterilization, all the steam consumption will be replaced by hot water. The integrated energy recovering system allowing to eliminate the boiler house in a brewery is innovatory.
In 1987 we carried out a feasibility study on an "Energy Efficient Brewery" concept and as such our EC-application for a European demonstration project was rewarded with a subsidy in December 1989.
Since then the location of the brewery where the EEB-concept was to be implemented has changed a great number of times, due to various reasons, i.e.: re-evaluation of Dreher management strategy, local management problems, etc.
At the end of 1991 it was decided that a new brewery was to built in Sicily and a nice opportunity presented itself to implement our EC demonstration project.
On the basis of the signed contract we started engineering up to the end of September, when word reached us that the Heineken Board of Directors had postponed the new Sicily brewery by a period of at least one year.
In the meantime one of the Heineken operating companies in Greece, Athenian Breweries, has shown a great deal of interest in the EEB-concept and has been making plans for an application of this energy saving concept under the Thermie-program.
