1 5 MW STALL CONTROLLED, LIGHT WEIGHT WIND TURBINE GENERATOR

Objetivo

Demonstration of a stall controlled, light weight 1,5 MW wind turbine with economics comparable to present commercial WTs.
Innovation : advanced low weight, stall optimized rotorblades, innovative control strategy for load reduction.
From 1st December 1995 until December 31st 1997 the availability of the turbine was 84%. Loss of availability occured mainly because of a failure of a bearing on one high-speed shaft in the gearbox (Jan.96) and the failure was repeated because of incorrect repair (Jan.97) and because of a failure of the 10 kV grid contactor (April 96).
Furthermore, in June 1997 the LM Glasfiber 60 m rotor was replaced to an Aerolam 64m rotor and the gear ratio increased.
This also leads to a lower energy capture as shown below :
1996 : 7.2 m/s and 2830 MWh
1997 : 8.0 m/s and 2935 MWh
Site Calc. : 8.2 m/s and 4170 MWh
Noise measurements showed a very silent wind turbine, i.e. a noise level of 102 dB (A) for booth rotors.
The project resulted successfully in a new serial 1.5 MW turbine with larger rotor (64m) higher towers (68 and 80m). Up to today NEG Micon has sold 42 of 1.5 MW turbines to Germany.
The operation cost has not been worked out because the turbine was operated as a prototype. However the operation costs are estimated to be at the same level as for the Nordtank 600 kW turbines.
The investment cost for a serial produced 1.5 MW turbine is estimated to be at the same level as for the Nordtank 600 kW turbine.
The project includes the demonstration of a stall controlled, light weight, 1,5 MW wind turbine generator well suited for series production; kWh costs of less than ECU 0.040 are expected to be demonstrated. The project includes upscalling of blades, drive-train concepts and modified control principles.
The project is run by Nordtank Energy Group, Denmark, in collaboration with the Danish Utility Pool ELSAM and with companies in Denmark and Germany.
The stall controlled, light weight, 1,5 MW wind turbine will have the following characteristics :
- 3 blade, up-wind, horizontal axis design
- blades : GRP material combined with Kevlar and Carbon Fibres
- rotor diameter : 60 meter
- rotor RPM: 19
- hub height: 52 meter (excl. foundation)
- nacelle weight: 32 kg/kW (35 tonnes)
- cut-in/cut out wind speeds: 4.5/25 m/sec
- nominal output : 1,5 MW at 12 m/sec
- annual production (at site): 3.5 GWh
- estimated costs of 1.1 MW machine in series production: ECU 1.04 mill.
The 1,5 MW turbine will be erected close the existing 2 MW Tjaereborg machine near Esbjerg, Denmark. The machine will be operated by the utility Vestkraft on behalf of ELSAM.
