NEW HYBRID PLANT - FIBRE SORGHUM - AS A COMPONENT IN MIXTURES OF PULPS CURRENTLY USED IN THE PAPER INDUSTRY

Objetivo

The demand for paper is still considerably increasing world-wide, especially in Southern Europe. Research is being carried out in several countries in order to achieve applications of annual fibre crops in the pulping industry. Opportunities for fibre-sorghum exist as a component in mixtures of pulps currently used in the paper industry.

Fibre sorghum is a hybrid plant with a high yield and we aim to optimise harvesting, storage and depithing of this plant by the following methods:

- harvesting by ensiler machine or cane mower, before ripening

- storage after drying, quite easy with this imputrescible plant

- moist depithing where plant after wetting is passed through a hammer mill depither and fibres screened, set up in 1990, during the feasibility stage.

In this project environmentally friendly processes will be set up and operated at pilot scale:

- Bivis high yield chemico thermomechanical pulp sodium
- Carbonate oxygen process (NACO)
- Generating soda from lime carbonate process.

Packaging and printing-papers are the main products targeted.

It is a multidisciplinary approach gathering seed sellers, agricultural development centres and paper manufacturers. These last companies have pilot plants and research teams.

This project will be completed by a socio-economic assessment of the whole production chain.
