Use of data processing in the management of rail traffic between signal boxes and its effect on the work of the signalmen

Objective

Aims of project:

Considering the number of operations which signalmen are required to perform, and the amount of responsibility which they have to shoulder, modernization of signal boxes through automation and data processing technology has not always taken into account the risks of overwork and excessive stress to which they may be exposed. The aim is to improve signalmen's working conditions by introducing direct dialogue between the computer equipment in neighbouring signal boxes.

The research is divided into the following stages:

an analysis of existing conditions (as the basis for drawing up specifications)
interviewing of operators
compilation of an inventory of accidents
analysis of operators' activities
establishment of data processing principles (software design)
breadboarding, taking account of the need to have permanent control of the block section and not to increase the personnel's workload
redefinition of the tasks and responsibilities of the signalmen.
