Ergonomic study of the use of a bricklaying robot for the construction of convertor linings in order to improve the working conditions of the bricklayers

Ziel

Aims of the project:

To analyse and overcome ergonomic problems involved in developing a robotised bricklaying system to convert the currently arduous bricklayer's job to a supervisory post based at a control cabin. The project results should be transferable to other companies.

Research method:

This comprises the following stages:

Setting up ad hoc multidisciplinary teams, including occupational psychology specialists and an expert in robotics safety.

Observation and measurement to determine the stresses and strains on bricklayers by means of ergonomic analysis, job profiles and heart rate measurement evaluated using Hettinger's and Vogt's methods.

Observations and interviews to establish the mental activities of bricklayers using video films.

Somatographic studies of workstations and access to them, using CAD.

Studies using scale models to aid understanding and representation of workstations during interviews with specialists and in the ergonomic design of new workstations.

Ergonomic analysis of the new bricklayer/operator job using methods developed under another ECSC Project on an expert system specifically designed for control rooms (Handlungsanalyse).

Research subject:

Ergonomic study of the bricklaying operation in the construction of convertor linings, carried out at two steelworks as back-up to a EUREKA project.
