Objectives:

To develop ergonomics specifications for message systems.

Methods:

Study of the literature.
Interviews with process operators.
Interviews with production managers.
Interviews with system designers.
Interviews with system maintenance personnel.
Interactive development of rules for the display of messages during re-design of a specific system and interviews to gauge reaction to the results of this.

Subject of the research:

The research concerns computer-controlled message systems. Although these are commonly referred to as "alarm systems", we prefer to use the term "message systems" for this project, since the screens involved display not only warnings but also messages and instructions for the operator.
