Objective This research aims to identify possibilities to improve the weakest links in the cycle of plant nutrients on dairy farms, namely the (efficiency of) utilization of N and other plant nutrients by the animals, and the (efficiency of) utilization of animal slurries by the crops. Both aspects will be studied in an integrated way : - study the strategic supplementation of forages produced with moderate or low levels of N, using as much home-grown feeds as possible; - study agronomic possibilities and environmental constraints of maximizing the proportion of home-grown feed energy and protein; - develop effective and low-emission slurry utilization systems on legume-based dairy farms. Results from the project should provide a framework for the development of extensive, land-based dairy systems.
