THE SEAWATER GREENHOUSE FOR ARID LANDS

Cel

The Seawater Greenhouse provides a controlled temperate environment that is optimised for plant growth. Surplus heat is extracted both from the solar radiation incident on the roof and from the incoming air. The heat is used to evaporate seawater. Pure water vapour transpired by the plants combines with the cooled and humidified air streams to generate a high relative humidity in the exhaust air. Pure water is chilled from the exhaust air which is passed through a heat exchanger, cooled by cold sea-water which is circulated from a depth. In the target environment, the Greenhouse will yield 30-40 litres/m{2}/day of distillate from seawater. The surplus water will be used to irrigate an outdoor planting area of approximately ten times that of the Greenhouse. The thermodynamic work of distillation is performed entirely by renewable energy sources. Additional power is required for air/water movement and control. Highlight levels in a temperate environment give optimum conditions for plant growth. Crops with local high value will be grown within the Greenhouse. Outdoor plants will be selected where their demand for irrigation water decreases with time after planting. The Greenhouse will thus serve as a battery for continuous reafforestation.
